Goodbye, Rietvlei

Today, we bid farewell to a true legend of Dinokeng Game Reserve.

With heavy hearts, we remember the remarkable life of Rietvlei, affectionately known as the Super Mom, who peacefully passed away on 6/02/2024. Although we are still awaiting lab results to determine the exact cause of death, we have noticed a decline in her condition over the last few weeks.

Born June 2014 on Welgevonden Game Reserve, since her arrival on DGR October 13, 2016, Rietvlei graced our reserve with her presence, leaving an indelible mark on all who were fortunate enough to encounter her. Over the 9 years and 7 months of her life, she played a pivotal role in the cheetah meta population of Southern Africa, raising over 15 beautiful cubs right here on our reserve.

Rietvlei wasn’t just a cheetah; she was an ambassador for her species, captivating landowners and guests alike with her grace, beauty, and undeniable spirit. Her regular sightings were a source of joy and wonder for all, a testament to her enduring legacy.

Though she may no longer roam our plains, Rietvlei’s memory will live on in our hearts and in the generations of cheetahs she helped bring into this world. Today, we honour her extraordinary life and the invaluable contributions she made to our ecosystem.

Rest in peace, dear Rietvlei. You will be deeply missed, but your spirit will forever roam free in the vast expanse of our memories. #Rietvlei #SuperMom #Cheetah
