Aviation in Conservation

Aviation plays a crucial role in the conservation efforts of Dinokeng Game Reserve, where the management of a sprawling 20,000-hectare expanse of diverse wildlife demands constant vigilance. To effectively oversee the well-being of priority species within the reserve, the Dinokeng team employs a powerful tool: the Savannah S fixed-wing aircraft.

Matt Temperley, wildlife monitor and fixed-wing pilot at Dinokeng Game Reserve, shoulders the responsibility of monitor and care of all the reserve’s priority species. The Savannah S aircraft emerges as a key asset in this endeavour, boasting design features perfectly suited for conservation flying. Its capacity to fly at low altitudes and slow speeds makes it an ideal platform for aerial wildlife monitoring. Moreover, its adaptability to challenging weather conditions, including extreme cold, heat, and moderate winds, enhances its effectiveness in the field.

Equipped with a cutting-edge telemetry tracking system, the aircraft incorporates sensors on each wing strut. These sensors transmit valuable data to a central switch-box connected to the pilot’s headset, enabling real-time monitoring of each animal through distinct “beeps” emitted by their collars or implants.

With an impressive endurance of 7.5 hours on full tanks, the aircraft facilitates comprehensive patrols across the entire game reserve in a relatively short timeframe. This efficiency ensures regular and thorough monitoring of the wildlife. The aerial perspective provides a distinct advantage, especially in identifying elusive species such as the Black Rhino, known for their preference for dense bush cover. Additionally, the aircraft proves invaluable in tracking and locating Rhinos that may be out of sight or have gone missing.

Beyond wildlife monitoring, the aircraft serves a critical role in anti-poaching efforts. Its presence acts as a substantial deterrent to potential poachers, bolstering the reserve’s security measures. Strategically based within the reserve, the aircraft allows for swift responses in the event of any poaching incidents, further enhancing the conservation team’s ability to safeguard the wildlife.

In essence, the synergy of aviation and conservation at Dinokeng Game Reserve, facilitated by the Savannah S fixed-wing aircraft, exemplifies a proactive and multifaceted approach to wildlife management and protection.
